Depressing poverty and glamorous wealth exist side by side on the slopes of the Bulgarian mountain Pirin. The road to world famous ski resort of Bansko looks like a chain of war ravaged villages. Of course, for the past 70 years there has never been a war here. Those ghost places have been left to the mercy of the elements for decades. A few people still living there have to cope with loneliness, lack of reliable communications, unemployment and most of all the neglect from the state. Here most distances are covered on foot due to lack of public transport. Growing tobacco and taking care of large herds of sheep are the most common ways to make a living. People here often confess that desperation is their only companion through life. Most young people are gone abroad in search of better life. Their lonely parents are waiting by the phone news from far away. In the mean time tens of luxurious car are driving past dying villages on the road to ski slopes of Bansko. Hundreds thousands of leva are spent each day in the hotels, restaurants and spa centres of the resort. A few locals are allowed to work there, the personnel mostly comes from Sofia. Those two worlds co-exist for decades. The contrast is noticed by the locals but still somehow neglected by the state.
