Four months after the devastating flood in Varna

Four months after the devastating flood in Bulgarian seaside town Varna there are still 82 homeless people forced to live in a van camp. The place contains 30 vans and is guarded by the police from 7 pm to 8 am. It is the only one van camp of this kind in Bulgaria. Most of its dwellers are of Roma origin. They have lost their homes in the flood on June 19th. Now people are desperate because the state has declared that they would get no help since their homes were illegally built. People of all ages inhabit the camp. Life is hard, confesses the mother of 7 year old girl Denka Alekova. Her daughter was not accepted to first grade in September due to lack of places at school. Both mother and daughter lament the lack of opportunity for education. Their 55 years old neighbour Danail Mladenov is remembering how he first learnt of the flood on the internet from Poland where he was working. The man returned to Varna as soon as possible to be with his loved ones. Some people on the camp have virtually managed to save only digital pictures of their destroyed homes. Walks around the van and talks with others are amongst few pastimes for the dwellers. They are expected to remain in the camp until August next year.
